Applied Data Systems (ADS) is sampling a pair of single-board computers (SBCs) aimed at embedded video-over-IP (VIP) applications. The NetCast Streamer can digitize and stream A/V signals at DVD quality, while the NetCast Player can decode streams for NTSC or PAL playback. Both boards run Linux, supported by Windows applications for digital signage and security.

SubWorks is a chain of restaurants of fast food in the United States. Of their 154 restaurants 12 of them has incorporated kiosk with touch screen that it allows the clients to directly make the orders to the kitchen.

In a market where the businesses have a very slow ROI in this case we must speak of a clear example in which the ROI has been of the 149 percent. Therefore this example is added to the list of future applications for the world of kiosk.

ECM-3624: Ideal SBC for kiosks from EPIC

EPIC is presenting a SBC thought specially for the sector of the Kiosk. One is model ECM-3624. Totally equipped yet the necessary thing to directly integrate it in a PIM or Kiosk. It honors specially the controller of the totally compatible touch screen with linux. To part also it has decoders MPEG2 and MPEG4 by hardware. This causes that their Pentium M to 1GHz is more than sufficient to run any multimedia application in this main board.

Target embedded OS developers are using

The results presented by the EETimes magazine on the survey of which operating system uses the designers of embedded systems we can find an article of answer in the well-known Internet site linuxdevices.com.

Interestingly, embedded market analyst Venture Development Corp. in January, 2006 reported that its surveys of highly qualified embedded developers found that Linux remains the most popular embedded OS, with between 13 and 15 percent of embedded developers using it as a target OS.

OSes used by 32-/64-bit embedded developers
(Source: VDC, May 2005.)

After this crossing of opinions and contradictory results in different sources maybe the best conclusion is to think that Linux is the operating system more used in architectures embedded of 32bits or 64bits. Also we must remember that the use of simpler architectures (< 32bits) with Linux systems does not have a very long trajectory in this field. This takes us to the conclusions that the article of the EETimes magazine pointed; limited or relatively new few drivers available, few expert designers with these systems, etc.

linux, embedded, eetimes, linuxdevices, survey

Low interest in Linux embedded

EE Times has published the results of a survey based on 1,217 respondents at the Embedded Systems Conference Silicon Valley (3 April). Only 17 percent of embedded systems designers are currently using embedded Linux, and 66 percent say they are either not interested in using it or do not expect to be using it anytime soon.

Seventy one percent of those considering using embedded Linux indicated that low cost was among the reasons for considering it, up two percent from 2005. Sixty one percent indicated that adaptability/extendibility was among the reasons for considering Linux, up from 58 percent in 2005.

linux, embedded, eetimes, Embedded-Systems-Conference-Silicon-Valley, Embedded-Systems-Conference, Silicon-Valley
